Appendix W - Where I Go for Writing Advice

When it comes to writing advice there is a lot of it out there, and not all of it is good. However, the ones on this list haven’t led me wrong yet.

Writing Advice/Theory

For general writing advice and theory I recommend the following youtube playlists:

The Brandon Sanderson BYU Lectures

Tim Hickson’s (Hello Future Me) On Writing video series and his books On Writing and Worldbuilding.

Sanderson’s lectures are high level college lectures that cover plot, pacing, worldbuilding, and Character. They aren’t in depth, but it’s a good primer and can help you avoid common mistakes.

Hickson’s On Writing is way more in depth, covering everything from how to construct a good fight scene, to building the right atmosphere and tone, to adding subtext into your work.

Publishing

Daniel Greene’s The Self Publishing Experience, covers his journey into self publishing his books, along with how much money he made from it, and a interview with Evan Winter where among other things they discuss how to market your self published book.

The Publishing Rodeo is where you can go for information on the publishing industry. How much you can expect to make from royalties, advances, etc. It’s all there, and it’s all great.
